Greek Licensing: Are you up to speed? We have found that most students who are in licensed groups are not GreekLicensed aware what that means, and many fraternity/sorority professionals do not educate on or enforce this policy. Considering the turnover among student leaders, education needs to take place annually at a minimum. At Greek 101, we do not see this education occurring nearly enough, so we are taking this opportunity to help inform the AFA community about a topic that affects all of us.

Did You Know:  Currently 59 fraternity and sororities require their members to order products from licensed vendors? The list includes all but one of the NPC organizations, so if you have inter/national sororities on your campus, this topic affects you. In addition to the chapters' orders, licensing also applies to Greek Week, recruitment, and other campus- or community-wide t-shirts if one of the chapters included is licensed. Just because a vendor is licensed does not mean that they hold the license to all the organizations on your campus; some licensed vendors only have one or two license agreements. Were the last shirts you ordered from an approved vendor?

Also note that just because a company is collegiate licensed with your school does not mean they are also licensed to print the fraternity/sorority trademarks. Please support the fraternal community, not just your local community. Often a decision needs to be made on whether it is more important for a shirt to include the organization's name or the school's name.

Allow Extra Time: Part of the production process includes an approval phase by the inter/national organization(s). This is required for EVERY job that includes Greek letters, crests, words, nicknames, etc. that are trademarks of the group. We work with the customer on their design, and then send the artwork to the inter/national organization for approval. EACH trademark owner is involved in the approval process. If one of the groups feels that the design is not something they want to be associated with, they can reject the artwork, possibly affecting YOUR t-shirt ordering timeline. This has required customers to start over creating a new idea or theme in very little time.

Please have your students call a licensed vendor for a price quote. We hope that Greek101 is one of your choices. We look forward to providing your students with an opportunity to experience our competitive pricing (both among local and other national licensed vendors), service, and quality that have helped us stand out from other fraternity and sorority suppliers for the past 10 years.

To further discuss this or for a copy of our latest catalog, e-mail jim@greek101.com. Thank you for your continued support -  see you at the AFA Annual Meeting!
