Reverse Mentoring: What Graduate Students Can Teach Us
June 25 | 2:00 - 3:30pm Eastern Time

Seasoned professionals are not the only valuable mentors. Graduate students hold a wealth of knowledge from which seasoned professionals can learn. Not only are they immersed in an educational experience of learning and writing, they can often provide us with generational perspectives that can help us relate better to our undergraduate students. Register today!

Calling All Leaders!
From now until June 30th, the Nominations and Elections Committee will accept Nomination Forms for the positions of President-Elect, Executive Vice President, Vice President for Membership, and the five Regional Directors. Our goal is to have an AFA leadership team that is reflective of the ever-diversifying demographics of AFA membership, and we need everybody's help to identify qualified candidates. Self-nominations are encouraged. Go here to learn more about the 2009 officer election process and to nominate deserving colleagues.

Liaison Spotlight
National Hazing Prevention Week

The Association of Fraternity Advisors is excited about its continued relationship with organizations working to combat hazing through education and awareness. AFA is a partner to the newly developed HazingPrevention.org organization through our liaison, Allison Swick-Duttine. The following is a brief update from HazingPrevention.org:

National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW)

September 22-26, 2008

Again this spring, one AFA member per campus received the National Hazing Prevention Week planning materials, thanks to AFA's sponsorship of HazingPrevention.org. Beginning in 2009, the publication will be distributed solely in an electronic format. HazingPrevention.org and SUNY Plattsburgh are coordinating a webinar called "A Hazing Death: Five Years Later & 10 Lessons Learned" to be held during NPHW. More information will be available by mid-June.

Go here to download your free copy of the 2008 National Hazing Prevention Week Planning Kit, brought to you by HazingPrevention.org.

National Hazing Symposium

The symposium will be held in conjunction with the 2008 AFA Annual Meeting as a pre-conference option on December 3rd in Denver, CO. The morning portion of the program will center around "Hazing: On Trial" with Dave Westol, followed by discussions about legal implications and how professionals can protect themselves from liability. The afternoon portion will be led by Elizabeth Allan and Mary Madden who will discuss the initial findings from their nationwide hazing study.

  • Become Familiar - July 31

  • Education - August 14  (90 minutes)
  • Assessment - August 21

AFA Award Nominations
Now is the time to nominate your colleagues and peers for their great work. Each year, AFA seeks to recognize outstanding contributions by our members in several different categories. There are new awards for 2008 to recognize graduate students who give their time and effort to the fraternal movement as well as campuses that have implemented outstanding educational programming.

The AFA Awards Committee is soliciting nominations for the 2008 honors. It takes only a few minutes of your time to submit a nomination. The process relies on you.

All nominations must be e-mailed to awards@fraternityadvisors.org by July 25th . Go here for more information.
