Highlights from the Summer Executive Board Meeting

The 2008 Executive Board held its summer meeting June 16th-18th. Read more about significant discussions and actions taken.

 

Involvement Opportunities
AFA values the contributions of its many volunteers and encourages you to choose an area of interest and contribute your time and talents.

 

Please take a few minutes to complete the 2009 Involvement Form and submit it online by September 5, 2008.


Additionally, you may choose to serve as a volunteer at the 2008 Annual Meeting in Denver, CO.  The Annual Meeting Planning Team is looking for members to serve in a variety of capacities.  Review and complete the 2008 Annual Meeting Volunteer Form here.

 

New Workgroup Forming - Volunteers Needed!
The Executive Board has approved the immediate formation of a workgroup to explore new opportunities for AFA members to connect, beyond their geopgraphical locations. The Affinity Groups Workgroup will begin work on August 1st. Go here for more information about this opportunity to get involved in one of the Association's strategic initiatives.


Annual Meeting Scholarships

Deadline: September 2

The Association of Fraternity Advisors Foundation is pleased to offer several scholarships for members to attend the 2008 Annual Meeting to be held December 3 - 7 in Denver, Colorado. Annual Meeting attendees value the opportunities for professional development and networking at the conference, and the generosity of our donors makes it possible for more people to take advantage of those opportunities.

 

Preference will be given to applicants who can show a specific need and/or would not be able to attend without this support. Go here to access the scholarship application. Applications must be received no later than Tuesday, September 2, 2008.

 

2008 Silent Auction - Donations Wanted!

Later this year, the AFA Foundation will conduct its 14th annual Silent Auction, but now is the time to make your donations. Go here to learn more about how you can support one of the Foundation's largest fundraisers.

 

Donations received by July 31, 2008 will be publicized on the AFA Foundation website and in AFA Foundation mailings. The final deadline for submitting a donation is Friday, November 7, 2008.

 

ACPA 2009 Convention Call for Programs
We encourage you to browse the ACPA 2009 Convention website to learn more about the convention theme, professional competencies and critical issues, and to learn about how to submit a proposal for an educational program. The deadline for program proposals is September 8, 2008.

Mental Health Issues and Their Impact on Today's College Student

With the consistently increasing number of students who enter college with diagnosed mental illnesses, student affairs and higher education rofessionals must be well equipped to be able to respond to these students' unique needs and experiences. Presenters will provide background information about some common issues surrounding mental health in the lives of college students and provide education and tools to further learning and ability to anticipate and respond to these student's needs. Consultant GPS - Guidance, Partnerships, Skills

AFA's newest program has been designed especially for fraternity/sorority consultants. This interactive webinar
will provide a working knowledge of the Association of Fraternity Advisors, a basic knowledge of student development theory, tips and guidelines for ways to approach each campus visit, and strategies for building collaborative relationships with campus fraternity/sorority professionals all from the comfort of your own office or conference room. AFA's First 90 Days Program

Are you starting your first professional position advising fraternities and sororities? If so, Be. R.E.A.D.Y. is for you! As a new professional in the field of fraternity and sorority advising you may find yourself asking questions such as: What is the best means for me to understand the fraternity/sorority culture at my new institution? How should I prioritize which relationships to build first? Who will be my biggest ally?

 

Be. R.E.A.D.Y. is a new program that will support you in this transition. A series of six virtual seminars and subsequent Online Community discussions begins July 31st, but there is still time to register. Go here for more information. AFA Awards Nominations

Deadline: July 25th

Don't miss your opportunity to recognize deserving colleagues for their outstanding contributions to their jobs, the Association, the profession, or the fraternal movement. There are new awards for 2008 to recognize our graduate student members that give their time and effort to our community.

 

Nominations for the 2008 Awards are due by July 25th. All nominations must be e-mailed to awards@fraternityadvisors.org. The process is simple, but it depends on your participation. Please take a few moments to nominate those exceptional individuals who should be honored in 2008. You can read more about the various awards and download the nomination form online.

 

AFA Membership Renewal

Don't forget to renew your AFA membership! You must renew by August 15th to avoid a lapse in your membership.

 

The online membership form is available for Professional, Affiliate, Graduate, and Retired members, to make renewing even easier. When you log onto our website using your member number and last name, all of your contact and demographic information will pre-populate in the renewal form, making it quick and easy for you to renew today.

 

Associate members can go to the membership renewal page to download a form and mail or fax the form to the Central Office.

 

Please contact the Central Office if you have any questions about membership renewal.

 

Perspectives Call for Submissions

The Perspectives Editorial Board is seeking articles for the Fall Issue. Articles must range in length from 600 words to a maximum of 2,800 words. Authors are encouraged to submit articles prior to the deadline of August 15th for an initial review. Please review the submission guidelines or contact Kurtis Foriska, Perspectives Editor, with questions.
