Coaching Students to Balance Their Lives and Leadership
September 24 | 2:00 - 3:30 pm Eastern TimeAre your students stressed out and over-involved? Do they have their hands in the pot of several organizations versus giving quality time to a few? Are they rushing, constantly connected to a phone, and really scattered? What does it mean to lead a balanced life? During this installment of the Virtual Seminar Series, we will explore these questions and many more. The goal of this workshop is to equip participants with some of the skills necessary to coach the students they advise to lead a more balanced life and to, perhaps, pick up a few tips on life balance themselves. Visit the AFA website for more information and register today!

National Hazing Prevention WeekAs a committed partner in the fight against hazing, AFA is again a national sponsor of NHPW. It's never too late to plan an awareness raising observance at your campus. AFA members have access to a great planning guide for NHPW activities. Additional awareness-raising resources are available for purchase at the NHPW website. NHPW offers a tremendous opportunity for fraternity and sorority leaders to come together with club leaders, student athletes, and faculty to end hazing on your campus.
"A Hazing Death: Five Years Later and 10 Lessons Learned." September 23 | 2:00 pm Eastern TimeIn March 2003, SUNY Plattsburgh freshman Walter Dean Jennings died while pledging an unrecognized former fraternity that had been closed by the College in 1998. During his 10-day pledge program, Jennings was forced to consume massive amounts of water and died from "water intoxication" the day before his torment was scheduled to end with initiation. Although Plattsburgh State had anti-hazing procedures and policies in place prior to Jennings death, professionals in the division of Student Affairs have since developed a comprehensive plan based on the lessons learned during the hazing tragedy. The campus has seen a remarkable change in the culture of hazing as a result.During National Hazing Prevention Week 2008, SUNY Plattsburgh and HazingPrevention.org will offer a webinar, "A Hazing Death: Five Years Later and 10 Lessons Learned." Three Plattsburgh State professionals involved in the investigation of the Jennings death and its aftermath will share tips on effective investigating, sanctioning, education and partnerships to prevent a similar tragedy on your campus. The webinar will be held on Tuesday, September 23 at 2 p.m. Eastern Time. The cost is $50 per site. To register, visit www.hazingprevention.org.
