Bylaws Revisions Pass
March 2009
The three proposals for revisions to the AFA Bylaws which were presented to the membership in January have all passed. Thank you to those members who cast their ballots.
The purpose of each revision is outlined below. All previously outlined changes will be made to the Bylaws document, and the updated version is available on the Association Business section of the AFA website.
Bylaw Revision #1
Article I: NAME
Purpose: This proposal changes the name of the Association from Association of Fraternity Advisors, Inc. to Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors, Inc. Clarity in the Association’s name would provide non-members a better understanding of the Association’s purpose, function, and membership. The proposed name is more representative of all AFA members and the work that they do, as well as more inclusive of all the Association’s partners.
The name change will officially take effect at the beginning of the new fiscal year, July 1, 2009.
Bylaw Revision #2
Article III: MEMBERSHIP, Article V: OFFICERS
Purpose: This proposal allows Graduate members the right to serve in elected or appointed officer positions for which they are eligible and meet the requirements as established in the Bylaws.
Bylaw Revision #3
Article II: PURPOSES, Article III: MEMBERSHIP, Article IV:FINANCE, Article V: OFFICERS, Article VI: EXECUTIVE BOARD, Article VII: REGIONAL DIRECTORS, Article VIII: MEETINGS, Article IX: NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS, Article X: REMOVAL AND IMPEACHMENT, Article XI: STANDING AND SPECIAL COMMITTEES, REPRESENTATIVES, AND AREA COORDINATORS, Article XIII: AMENDMENTS, Article XIV: RESOLUTIONS
Purpose: This proposal revises the Bylaws for clarity, grammar, and consistency. The revisions also seek to ensure that the document reflects current Association practice and language. A large number of operational changes have been completed since April 2006, when the Bylaws were last revised, thus various updates are necessary. Proposed revisions pertain to officer/staff responsibilities, terminology, operational procedures, and grammar.
