A Minute with the Board Last month hundreds of fraternity and sorority leaders - both inter/national and undergraduate - arrived in Washington, DC for the annual Fraternity and Sorority Congressional Visit Day. This "Day on the Hill" is an effort to lobby on behalf of the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (H.R. 1547 / S.781). This year, three members of the AFA Executive Board participated in the visits, including Carrie Whittier, President; Kelly Jo Karnes, President Elect; and Shelly Brown Dobek, Vice President Administration and Finance. >>Read Whittier's full update
2009/2010 Membership Renewal AFA's membership year is July 1-June 30. The first renewal notices will be mailed in just a few days. Affiliate Member Group Discount AFA offers a discount to Affiliate members who join as a group. Affiliate members are individuals actively concerned with enhancement of the advisement of men's or women's fraternities who are not employed in full-time administrative positions by a college/university or inter/national fraternity or sorority. To take full advantage of the group discount, all members should sign up at the same time. Groups may be made up of individuals volunteering for a fraternity or sorority (Ex. the national officers of an organization) or individuals from a college or university (Ex. all the chapter advisors from a campus). An individual can only be counted in one group. Download this form to take advantage of this group discount.
Member Referral Incentives Several AFA members have earned complimentary membership or Annual Meeting registration simply by referring others to join AFA. You could be next! To complement the Affiliate Member Group Discount described above, we are making it easy for all other members to earn incentives. (Affiliate members are no longer eligible to receive incentives for recruiting other members, since they can benefit from the group discount.) Go here to learn more.
AFA Foundation Silent Auction: What Would You Bid On?
The AFA Foundation is already working on soliciting great items for the 2009 Silent Auction which will be held at the Annual Meeting. Each year, we strive to provide a variety of offerings for you to bid on in the Auction. Please help us provide items that you want - if there is a particular item you would like to see in the 2009 Auction (ex. an i-phone or a specific professional speaker), or a type of item that you think would be appealing to many potential bidders (ex. a restaurant gift card or tickets to sporting events), please let us know. Email the AFA Foundation with your ideas. Thank you! We appreciate your feedback!
The First 90 Days Program Registration now open! The First 90 Days Program exists to assimilate first-time fraternity/sorority life professionals by developing an awareness of their role in the fraternal relevance landscape, by building skills necessary for a successful transition and long-term career, and by sharing knowledge that will lead to strong connections among peers and partners. The 12-week program will complement the transition into a first, full-time campus role working with fraternities and sororities through a series of webinars, a peer-to-peer cohort experience, and guided learning and networking with AFA volunteers.
Registration: A First 90 Days Program registration would be the perfect graduation gift for a graduate student, professional development experience for a new hire, or resource for yourself as you begin a new position or new career. The registration form is available now.

Survey for Supervisors of Campus Fraternity/Sorority Professionals
The AFA Recruiting Supervisors Workgroup is surveying supervisors of campus fraternity/sorority professionals to determine how AFA can best serve the needs of more student affairs professionals. The workgroup is asking for your help. If you are a supervisor, please take a few moments to complete a brief survey so that we can improve the services of AFA. Also, for campus fraternity/sorority professionals, please forward this survey to your campus supervisor (whether or not s/he is an AFA member). For sample email text to send to your supervisor, please click here.

ADDIE: The Principles of Professional Curriculum Design May 20, 2009 | 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. Eastern
Fraternity and sorority professionals design curriculum almost every day. Despite being a basic expectation of the job, few of us have ever received formal training on how to do it effectively. Fortunately, the training and development industry has institutionalized a few basic principles that offer many simple ways to dramatically improve the impact of every program. Attend the May installment of the Virtual Seminar Series to develop this valuable skill.
