In This Issue:

A Minute with the Board
So you have been volunteering for AFA this past year, or perhaps for several years, and maybe the thought of an Executive Board or Regional Director position has crossed your mind? Maybe you have even been approached or nominated before, but hesitated thinking this was too much of a time commitment; or maybe you just were not clear what exactly you would be doing if you were a Board member or Regional Director. The Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors needs leaders who are committed to advancing the fraternal movement, but what does this mean? What does serving as an elected officer of the Association really entail? >> Read more from Jay Anhorn, Past President

Liaison Highlight
Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS)

Earlier this year we provided an update as to the goings on within CAS. AFA has been a part of CAS for almost as long as CAS has been in existence. Through participation in CAS, AFA is able to participate in the broad discourse on how self-assessment can inform how higher education's broad goals of student learning and development must be fostered within student affairs functions. Persons working within student affairs should use the CAS Standards for creating effective programs to improve the experience of students. Fraternity and Sorority Advising Programs is one example of these standards. >> Read full update on CAS

Effective Hazing Prevention Programming
June 30 | 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. Eastern

Because there is no research specific to effective hazing prevention, we are forced to borrow from prevention science which addresses problems such as alcohol and drug abuse and campus violence, including sexual assault. Thanks to the work of The Higher Education Center for Alcohol & Other Drug Abuse & Violence Prevention (HEC), effective methods for addressing these problems have been identified and are available to inform our work. Based predominantly on their work around violence prevention, the HEC has set forth nine principles of effective hazing prevention strategy on the campus level, which will be used as the basis for this program.

For more information and to register, please visit the AFA website.

The First 90 Days Program Registration now open!
The first 90 days of any new job are the most critical. Do you have a game plan for success? AFA's The First 90 Days Program was designed to help you or your new staff member transition into a first, full-time campus role through the use of webinars, a peer-to-peer cohort experience, and guided learning and networking with AFA volunteers. By the end of the 12-week program, participants will have an awareness of their role in the fraternal relevance landscape, build skills necessary for a successful transition and long-term career, and gain knowledge that will lead to strong connections among peers and partners. Let AFA complement your transition into the fraternity/sorority advising profession with The First 90 Days Program.

Registration: Need a gift for a graduate student? Want to provide inexpensive professional development for a new hire? Looking for a resource as you begin your new position or new career? Then complete the registration form today.

Who Won?! Who Won?!
Awards Deadline | July 1

We won't know who won the 2009 AFA Awards until the Annual Meeting in December, but you can help choose the winner by nominating one of your colleagues or an outstanding program. A nomination can help you show a mentor the impact he/she had on your career, recognize and motivate a graduate student or new professional who will be the future of AFA, or acknowledge a program that should be shared with sorority and fraternity communities across the country. Nominations only take a few minutes and can be e-mailed to awards@fraternityadvisors.org. Visit the AFA website for more information. The deadline is July 1.
