A Minute with the Board
“From the Top”
Kelly Jo Karnes, 2010 AFA President
November 2009

Transition…we are seeing it everywhere that we look. The leaves turn from green to beautiful shades of gold and red, as the weather changes to cooler days and nights. This progression is also occurring among the students and volunteers with whom we work. Outgoing leaders are wrapping up their time, and new, eager leaders are ready to take the helm!

Within the Association, we too are experiencing a similar type of transition. Volunteers are wrapping up roles and completing assessments, as new leaders prepare to carry on the work of the Association. The AFA Executive Board is preparing to make the changeover to our next set of leaders of the fraternal movement. I am excited to share that the 2010 Executive Board continues to be diverse, as we now have two officers  who are inter/national organization staff members and are excited to welcome back a NALFO member to the board in Monica Miranda Smalls, President-Elect.

Another big transition will occur this year, as we will conclude work with our strategic plan from the last five years and begin to write a new plan that will take the Association through the year 2015. This will be our guide and roadmap for the future of this Association. Members will be offered the opportunity to provide directives, topics, and areas that you wish to see included in this strategic plan, so please take advantage of that when it is offered!

As you ponder the transition occurring within your campus or inter/national organization, please remember that just because you know how something is to occur, there are new and eager leaders taking over who will need help with their training and transition. Be a good resource, be patient, and remember that the work we do on the front end will go far in the work we do in the future.
