HAZING PREVENTION
Printer Friendly Version Email This Article

Hazing is an enormous issue – one that reaches deeply into higher education and beyond affecting high schools, the military and sports at many levels. A comprehensive approach to tackling the constantly recurring plague of hazing is needed. The challenge is best met through important partnerships with others who are also dealing with this issue. The following resources can help you in the fight against hazing.

Hazing on Campus

A must-have resource for professionals as they work to combat hazing on campus, this publication was created as part of the Association’s overall plan to address hazing. Hazing on Campus serves to educate and broaden the existing knowledge base on hazing, and to provide support to individuals addressing hazing on college and university campuses.

Addressing Hazing Within Fraternities and Sororities (Virtual Seminar Recording)
Each year since 1970 at least one student has died while pledging or rushing a fraternity or sorority at a U.S. college/university. Hazing incidents across the country have led to the closing of chapter houses, removal of members, and civil and criminal prosecution, including jail time. This virtual seminar focuses on the challenges inherent in defining hazing; basic issues of criminal and civil liability; the need for a collaborative approach to investigating and adjudicating hazing incidents; and strategies for addressing hazing on our campuses.

National Hazing Prevention Week
AFA is once again co-sponsoring National Hazing Prevention Week. Planning kits, including program ideas, flyers, and promotional tools, are available to AFA members to help with awareness and programming efforts on their campuses. We hope that AFA members will develop innovative programming to raise awareness of this issue across all areas of campus. Our thanks to HazingPrevention.Org for their leadership on this initiative.

Unless a Death Occurs
Unless a Death Occurs is an incisive documentary on the pervasiveness of hazing on America's high school and college campuses. In particular, this film traces the tragic steps of Walter Dean Jennings, a Plattsburgh State University College freshman, who ultimately paid his tormentors the highest price for admittance into a fraternity banned by college authorities.

The AFA Foundation has awarded a grant to Mountain Lake PBS in support of the dissemination of the documentary and companion study guide. This new resource can assist all fraternity/sorority professionals as they work to combat one of the greatest challenges to the fraternity experience. AFA Members receive a 10% discount on the DVD/educational study guide. Use the AFA order form to purchase your copy of this valuable educational tool.
