Audience
Perspectives is distributed to all members of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors. Members include student personnel administrators with responsibilities related to the fraternity and sorority life programs, student affairs program faculty, graduate students, fraternity and sorority headquarters staff members, regional and inter/national fraternity and sorority volunteers, and chapter advisors. Since the readership is diverse, Perspectives strives to strike a balance between theory and practice by offering both articles based on research or methods for improving the administration of fraternity and sorority programs and policies.
Submission Guidelines
The Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors welcomes articles for Perspectives that seek to compliment the AFA Core Competencies for Excellence in the Profession identified as: Educator, Values Aligner, Collaborator, Advisor, Administrator, Researcher, Innovator, and Leader. These competencies are explored and developed through articles focusing on scholarly research, literature reviews, examination of current events or legislative issues affecting fraternities/sororities, professional development issues, reports on organizational or institutional programs, interviews, or opinion pieces.
Regular sections of Perspectives include feature articles, book reviews, and two columns entitled Core Competencies, and From Where I Sit. Core Competencies focuses on a tip, technique, or strategy to aid individuals in fulfilling one or more of the competencies. From Where I Sit is an op-ed column designed to offer a variety of perspectives regarding a specific topic concerning fraternity and sorority advising. The viewpoints expressed in this column are not limited to AFA members, but rather anyone impacted by fraternities and sororities.
There are a multitude of potential article topics that authors could consider. Some of these include values congruence, constructive judicial sanctioning, retention, collaborating with faculty, strategic planning, assessment, accreditation programs, commuter campuses, family involvement, ethical development, job search strategies, transitioning to a new job, building town-gown coalitions, developing technology skills, the change process, risk management standards and partnering with alumni/national organizations. Authors are encouraged to be creative in writing about and submitting articles on any topics relevant to fraternity/sorority advising.
Language and Style
Authors are to follow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). When appropriate, authors may use first person in the event the article is more informal, such as an opinion piece or personal interview.
Recommended Length
Articles for Perspectives may vary in length. The recommended length for a feature article has ranged from 1500–3000 words. However, the quality, relevance, and cohesiveness of the writing will be the deciding factor to print an article rather than the length. Any questions regarding the length of an article should be directed to the Editor.
Submission
Submit articles electronically to the Perspectives Editor. Please attach the article or manuscript as a Microsoft Word document. The document should be double-spaced and all diagrams or graphic figures must be camera-ready. Please provide the name, title, institution/organization, and contact information of each author both in the body of the email and at the top of the article. It is the author’s responsibility to keep the Editor informed of any changes in contact information after the article is submitted for review. Authors are encouraged to submit their articles before the deadlines whenever possible.
Review Process
Once an article has been received, the Editorial Board of Perspectives will review for content relevancy, clarity of presentation, style of writing, usefulness to readers, and quality of methodology or program. Notification of acceptance or rejection of all manuscripts will be made by the Editor. Feedback will be provided to authors upon request. If the article is published, appropriate language and style changes may be made to the article prior to publication without the author’s knowledge.
Articles not considered for publication in Perspectives may be submitted to Oracle: The Research Journal of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors, for consideration by that Editorial Board. Please indicate at time of submission if you do not want your article to be considered by Oracle.
