The AFA Volunteer - June 2008

The Informed Volunteer

Renewing Your AFA Membership

Anne Arseneau, Volunteer Coordinator

This month's Informed Volunteer is NOT for those of you who always complete your "to do" list every day and have a desk that is always perfectly clean... it's for the rest of us who might procrastinate a little more than is wise and tend to need one or two gentle nudges to get some things done.

Now is the time (if you haven't already done so) to renew your AFA membership! Do it today!  We all got that renewal form (more than) several weeks ago and as active volunteers we know the benefits of membership in AFA:

  • Participation in a network of nearly 1,700 fraternity and sorority advising professionals working with over 600,000 collegiate members of men's and women's fraternities
  • Full access to the AFA website, including an online discussion community, a searchable membership database, job placement services, past issues of our publications, a searchable Knowledge Center containing resources, models & samples, and much more
  • Subscriptions to all AFA Publications
  • Reduced member rates for all AFA resources
  • Reduced member registration rates for the Annual Meeting and Virtual Seminars
  • Volunteer opportunities on a state, regional or national level

You must be renewed by August 15th in order to avoid a lapse in your membership - and the ability to continue in your volunteer role. With vacations, leadership conferences, and the amount of time it can take to process invoices at some of our host institutions or organizations, that deadline will be here too soon.

I've renewed... I hope you'll take five minutes today as well to renew YOUR membership. We want and need you back as a volunteer next year!

Volunteer Leader Status Reports

Due July 31

Each volunteer leader is responsible for submitting a Status Report on a quarterly basis, at a minimum. The next quarterly Status Reports are due July 31st. Regional Directors, Committee Chairs, Liaisons, Editors, and Workgroup Chairs should submit Status Reports to their volunteer supervisor. The Executive Board and staff are committed to reviewing all Status Reports and providing volunteers with the guidance, feedback, and support necessary to accomplish their goals.

Volunteer of the Year

It's never too early to think about recognizing the exceptional volunteers you work with through AFA.  Each year, AFA seeks to recognize outstanding contributions by our volunteers including the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year. It only takes a few minutes of your time to submit a nomination.  Email the names of exceptional volunteers to Jason Pierce by Friday, September 26, 2008.  Please be sure to include their institution/organization, phone number, email address and why you believe they are deserving of this honor.

Awards Nomination Due July 25

Each year, AFA seeks to recognize outstanding contributions by our members in eight different categories.  The AFA Awards Committee invites you to submit nominations for the 2008 honors. The process relies on you. All nominations must be e-mailed by July 25, 2008. Go here for more information.
