The AFA Volunteer - September 2008

Outstanding Volunteer Award
Nomination Deadline | September 26

You have one more week to nominate exceptional
volunteers for the Outstanding Volunteer Award! Up to eight volunteers will be recognized for their outstanding performance during 2008 at the AFA/AFA Foundation Recognition Luncheon at the Annual Meeting. Any current volunteer may nominate other volunteers who served the Association in 2008. Volunteers at all levels of service (other than the Executive Board) are eligible for recognition.

Please take a few minutes to nominate your supervisor, a member of your committee, or a peer whom you have seen do great work. Email the names of exceptional volunteers to Sarah McCracken by Friday, September 26, 2008.  Please be sure to include their institution/organization, phone number, email address and why you believe they are deserving of this honor.

Did You Know... The Informed Volunteer
Quarterly Status Report Due Date | October 31

September and October can arguably be some of the busiest months of the year for many of our volunteers.  That being said, here is a friendly reminder that your next quarterly status report is due October 31. These quarterly status reports are due directly to your supervisor (whether that person is a board member, staff member, or the Annual Meeting Chair). You should use the form that is in Appendix H (p. 35) of the AFA Standard Operating Procedures Manual.

Some of you are submitting monthly (or even weekly) reports to supervisors. If this is the case with your particular reporting, please be sure to check with your supervisor to see how he/she wants you to merge the reports to avoid double paperwork! Remember that the quarterly reports will be read by more people than monthly reports and should be more broad in focus (i.e. address the status of ALL your projects/goals for the year, not just those things you have worked on lately).

The Association is committed to making sure your volunteer experience is productive and meaningful to both the organization and to you! Please let Sarah McCracken or Anne Arseneau know if you have any questions or comments.

Volunteer of the Month - Helen Rotnem

Helen Rotnem, Coordinator of Greek Life for The Ohio State University, serves the Association as Chair of the Consultant Training Workgroup. The Consultant Training Workgroup has now presented its resource at several fraternal meetings and training sessions, and has conducted a Virtual Seminar as well. Her nominator, Dan Bureau, states "she led us through the project very well. She helped us pull it all together for a well run and comprehensive session." Thanks Helen!

Volunteer of the Month - Tyler Blair

Tyler Blair, Graduate Assistant for the Student Involvement and Leadership Center at The University of Kansas, serves the Association as a member of the Technology Committee. Tyler has been critical to the establishment, design, and policy regarding the AFA Facebook Group. His nominator, Dave Conner, states "as the Volunteer Leader of the Technology Committee, I believe that Tyler has exceeded and expanded the charge of our committee and deserves our recognition and thanks. Tyler's commitment to establish additional means of communication and promotion will help AFA to remain relevant as social and professional networking technologies continue to evolve." Thanks Tyler!
Core Competencies for Excellence in the Profession Highlight

In the coming months, many of us are preparing in both our volunteer and professional roles to attend the Annual Meeting. As we come together to reach our Peak Performance, it would benefit us all to reflect upon how our work, both volunteer and professional, reflects and integrates the Core Competencies for Excellence in the Profession.
