Association Update - February 2009

In This Issue:

A Minute With the Board
This morning, as I was preparing to leave for work, I watched indifferently as MSNBC reported on the throng of enthusiastic spectators gathered at Gobbler's Knob to witness Punxsutawney Phil emerge from his den to advise Americans whether they should toss the snow shovel back into the storage shed or keep it within reach for another six weeks. >> Read the rest of Jeremiah Shinn's article Groundhog Day

AFA Membership Campaign

We have reached the mid-point of AFA's membership year, but it is not too late for you to benefit from referring new members. Through our Membership Incentive Program you can earn complimentary membership and Annual Meeting registration simply by encouraging others to join AFA. Sonja Jensen, Parice Bowser, and Amanda Turfan are among those who have already won membership for the 2009-2010 membership year...will you be next?

CHIA Update

If you have been watching the news, you are aware that the 111th Congress is considering a $300 billion economic stimulus package. The great news is that there is a chance that the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (CHIA) will be attached to the stimulus package. To learn how more about CHIA and how you can help, click here.

Annual Meeting Educational Programs Online

The 2008 Annual Meeting Planning Team was thrilled with the quality programs that were offered at the 2008 Annual Meeting and hopes you found them to be beneficial as well. If you were unable to attend the Annual Meeting, missed a program that sounded interesting, or simply misplaced your handouts, the materials from many of the Educational Programs are now available in AFA's Knowledge Center! Programs are organized by Core Competency. Thanks to our many wonderful presenters, you can continue your learning throughout the year.

If you presented at the Annual Meeting, but don't see your handouts online yet, please email them to the Central Office.

College Panhellenic Conversations

Inclusive Fraternal Organizations: What Advisors Need to Know about Emerging Fraternities and Sororities
February 24 | 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time

It is our responsibility to prepare ourselves to serve the increasingly diverse fraternal movement and ensure its continued existence and relevance. This seminar will advance the conversation about organizations from the National Multicultural Greek Council (NMGC), National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO) and the National Asian Pacific Islander American Panhellenic Association (NAPA). The Association of Fraternity Advisors NALFO/NMGC/NAPA Resource Workgroup will sponsor panelists to share their knowledge about the organizations, history, issues and trends, and discuss strategies for collaboration on how to respond and meet the needs of these students.

For more information and to register, please visit the AFA website.

New Resource! NMGC Resource Guide Now Available

Thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers, led by Monica Miranda Smalls, the Association has a great, new, FREE resource for members! The NMGC Resource Guide provides the reader with all the necessary information to work with National Multicultural Greek Council member fraternities and sororities. Featured content includes contact information for all NMGC organizations, detailed information about each organization's new member intake requirements and traditions, as well as the history of the NMGC. Go here (member login required) to download this free resource now!

This guide is the second in a four-part series, with future guides focusing on NALFO and NAPA chapters. The NPHC Membership Intake Guide was released last year.

NASPA Annual Conference
AFA members attending the NASPA Annual Conference in Seattle this March will find several educational programs and other events related to fraternity and sorority life. Go here for a summary of those programs. One of these events is the Fraternity/Sorority Knowledge Community's Interfraternal Luncheon, for which AFA is a co-sponsor. While this event is invitation-only for senior student affairs officers, there may be an opportunity for AFA members to purchase luncheon tickets should any seats go unfilled. If you are interested in purchasing a luncheon ticket, please e-mail Linda Wardhammar, Executive Director, to be placed on the waiting list.
