A Minute With the Board

As we approach the middle of the summer, we find ourselves engaging in a variety of activities from summer vacations, facilitating leadership experiences for our students, and accepting new positions and moving, to catching up on missed TV or enjoying great times with friends and family. >>Read update from Thad Doyle

 

New Volunteer Opportunity

The Executive Board has approved the immediate formation of workgroups to create two resources focused on providing campus fraternity/sorority professionals the fundamental information they need to most effectively work with Interfraternity or Panhellenic councils and their member organizations. The Association is looking for members with knowledge of Panhellenic and Interfraternity councils, the NIC, and the NPC. The two workgroups will begin work very soon. To express interest in getting involved in this strategic initiatives and serve as a chair or member of one of the workgroups, email Sarah McCracken, Director of Member Services.

 

The First 90 Days Program Registration Now Open!
The first 90 days of any new job are the most critical. Do you have a game plan for success? AFA's The First 90 Days Program was designed to help you or your new staff member transition into a first, full-time campus role through the use of webinars, a peer-to-peer cohort experience, and guided learning and networking with AFA volunteers. By the end of the 12-week program, participants will have an awareness of their role in the fraternal relevance landscape, build skills necessary for a successful transition and long-term career, and gain knowledge that will lead to strong connections among peers and partners. 2009 Silent Auction
Deadline to be listed on the AFA Foundation Website | July 31


Please start planning now for what you might want to bid on at the AFA Foundation's Silent Auction in Jacksonville - a weekend get-away; Big 10 items; jewelry; restaurant gift cards; or a professional speaker? And if you plan to donate an item, please do so by July 31 so we can list the item and recognize you as the donor on the AFA Foundation website. If you have any questions or any requests for Silent Auction items, please email foundation@fraternityadvisors.org. All donations help the Foundation fund projects aimed at strengthening our profession, including research and professional development programs. Go here for more information and a donation form.

 

AFA Foundation Annual Report
The AFA Foundation Annual Report recognizes 2008 annual donors, silent auction donors, and recipients of cumulative giving recognition. It also provides information about the Amicus Sequentes Circle, a planned giving effort, and highlights the grants provided by the Foundation so donors can see the impact of their contributions. College Panhellenic Conversations
The July issue of College Panhellenic Conversations, the e-newsletter from the NPC College Panhellenics Committee, is now available.

New Name for Association Takes Effect Today

AFA will officially begin use of its new name, Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors, on Wednesday, July 1. The Central Office is updating all electronic and printed communication. The Association asks that if you have a link to the AFA website on college, university, and/or organization websites that you update your link to reflect the name change. Please contact the Central Office with any questions.

 

Central Office Closed July 3
The Central Office will be closed Friday, July 3 in observance of Independence Day. The staff will return all phone calls and emails as soon as possible when they return to the office on Monday, July 6.

 

2009 NHPW 5th Anniversary Resource Package - Sponsored by HPO & AFA
Join the Association and HazingPrevention.Org in celebrating the 5th Anniversary of National Hazing Prevention Week! A commemorative resource package will include:

  • Participation in 1 HPO-coordinated live virtual seminar
  • Participation in 1 AFA-coordinated live virtual seminar
  • Receipt of 1 HPO virtual seminar recording
  • Receipt of 1 AFA virtual seminar recording
  • Receipt of 1 HPO resource
  • Receipt of 1 AFA resource

A virtual chat will be scheduled with the presenters of both organizations' previously recorded virtual seminar, to allow purchasers of the package the opportunity to ask questions and gain insight on any relevant changes to the research since the time of recording. The complete package will be available for $175.

Perspectives Call for Articles
How has the economy affected your work as a fraternity/sorority advisor? Perspectives is looking for information as to how AFA members have dealt with the economic issues facing our country on their campuses, in their organizations, and with our students. The Editorial Board is seeking articles on this topic and in all areas related to fraternity/sorority advising. Articles must range in length from 600 words to a maximum of 2,800 words. Authors are encouraged to submit articles prior to the deadline of August 1 for an initial review. Please review the submission guidelines or contact Allison St. Germain, Perspectives Editor, with questions.


AFA Membership Renewal
Don't forget to renew your AFA membership! You must renew by August 15 to avoid a lapse in your membership.


The online membership form is available for Professional, Affiliate, Graduate, and Retired members, to make renewing even easier. When you log onto our website using your member number and last name, all of your contact and demographic information will pre-populate in the renewal form, making it quick and easy for you to renew today.

Associate members can download a form and mail or fax the form to the Central Office.

Involvement Opportunities
AFA values the contributions of its many volunteers and encourages you to choose an area of interest and contribute your time and talents. The 2010 Involvement Form will be available beginning July 10. Please visit the Volunteer Opportunities section of the website after July 10 to learn more.


There will again be an opportunity to serve as an Annual Meeting Ambassador (on-site volunteer) at the 2009 Annual Meeting in Jacksonville, FL. The Annual Meeting Planning Team is looking for members to serve in a variety of capacities. Position descriptions and a volunteer interest form will be available beginning July 10 also on the Volunteer Opportunities section of the website.

Lead speaker Paul F. Davis takes audience members from feeling overwhelmed to empowered as he shares his experiences of overcoming nearly every adversity imaginable: an unstable childhood including pneumonia, divorce, an alcohol and drug-addicted mother, and an abusive stepmother. After his mother's death at the hands of a drunk driver and his brother's 10-year prison sentence for substance abuse, Paul learned to aggressively tackle academics and excel in baseball and graduated Cum Laude from UCF in 3 years at the age of 20. Since then he has become a worldwide speaker touching over 50 countries & 6 continents, while authoring 18 life-changing books. A former 12th grade high school English teacher to newly immigrated international students, Paul understands the needs of global students and how to empower them for academic success.
