A Minute with the Board
Like much of the country, Iowa has been seeing its fair share of snow days. As I woke up one morning to shovel at 6:15am, and was finally done around 8:00am, I headed into the house for a quick shower before heading to the office. As I opened the garage door to leave around 9:00am, the driveway was once again covered. My initial thought was: “Didn’t I just shovel this?! When is it ever going to stop?”  >>Read more from 2010 President Kelly Jo Karnes

AFA Bylaw Revision Proposal

On January 26, 2010, all eligible voting members of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors will receive an electronic message asking for a vote on a revision to the Association's bylaws. The revision, which was presented at the Business Meeting, proposes the additions of a Resolutions Committee and Audit Committee to the committees of the Executive Board (Article VI, Section C). The actual ballot will include word-for-word detail as to how the proposal would change the bylaws.

Engaging First-Generation College Students in Fraternity/Sorority Life
Wednesday, January 27 | 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. Eastern

First-generation college students are commonly defined as those students who are the first in their family to attend college. Understanding their experiences and characteristics can help institutions improve student retention rates, campus engagement, and academic achievement. Furthermore, by recognizing and embracing the needs and desires of first-generation college students, the fraternity/sorority community can enhance their recruitment and membership development efforts. In this unique program, a Doctoral student researching first-generation college students will share important data and research outlining significant implications that first-generation college students have throughout our campuses and fraternity/sorority communities. Our discussion will open your mind on creative initiatives and strategies that will educate, impact, and involve first-generation college students within the fraternity/sorority community like never before.
