Volunteer of the Month - Angela King Angela King advanced two of the Association's strategic goal areas - Inclusiveness and Community and Information, Knowledge, and Learning - through the completion of AFA's newest resource, the NPHC Membership Intake Guide. Angela lead the workgroup tasked with researching, creating, and writing this guide. Though her task may have been amorphous in the beginning ("We need some sort of educational piece on this topic..."), Angela developed a clear outline for the project and kept the workgroup members involved in implementing her vision. Her work also set up the Association for a series of Membership Intake Guides, with future issues focusing on NALFO, NAPA, and NMGC organizations. Thank you, Angela! Please contact the Central Office to recommend a Volunteer of the Month. Central Office Communication The Central Office server will be down for maintenance February 28-29, 2008. Staff will not have access to internet or email during this time. If you need to communicate with staff on those days, please call 317.876.1632.Did You Know... The Informed Volunteer Tax TimeWhile the Association of Fraternity Advisors strives to cover most of our volunteers' expenses in carrying out their duties for the Association, there may be instances when established budget allocations are not sufficient to entirely cover expenses related to your AFA duties. If you have incurred out-of-pocket expenses due to your involvement in AFA, these expenses may be tax deductible. For tax purposes, members who have legitimate out-of-pocket expenses directly related to their participation in an AFA authorized initiative, and which are over-and-above program-allocated dollars, are urged to retain all receipts of expenditures and to seek tax counsel for applicable charitable exemptions on their personal tax returns.
As you prepare your tax documents, be aware that you may be eligible for deductions of any personal expenses incurred on behalf of AFA.Travel Reimbursements The Executive Board approved an amendment to the financial policy outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures Manual. Ground travel for AFA business that has been budgeted or pre-approved will be reimbursed at $.505 per mile, in accordance with the IRS 2008 standard mileage rate. This change can be found on page 10 of the Procedures Manual and is also reflected in the Travel Reimbursement and Budget Request forms. Volunteer Fun Facts Curious about who else is volunteering for AFA? We currently have 231 volunteers. Of those, 55 are in their first AFA volunteer role. Approximately 180 of our volunteers are Professional members; 15 are Affiliate members; 25 are Graduate members; nine are Associate members; and one is a Retired member. Ten of our Past Presidents are still actively involved in the Association! We have over fifty positions, committees, workgroups, or editorial boards.Quick And Dirty TipsWe know that your time is valuable and that you try to fit a lot into your days - work, family, volunteering, etc. It's hard to stay on top of everything, much less learn information and techniques to help you improve.
