Volunteer Evaluations AFA's annual 360-degree Volunteer Assessment is rapidly approaching! All volunteers will participate in an assessment process that allows them to evaluate their own performance as well as that of their volunteer supervisors and any volunteers they supervise. Mark your calendars now, and please set aside some time for this important project. This process is essential to our success as a volunteer-driven organization. The key dates are outlined below:
April 27 - May 15: Complete online evaluation forms June 1: Evaluation summaries will be distributed by the Central Office June 4-10: Volunteer Coordinator and Director of Member Services will hold conversations with Board Members, Annual Meeting Chair, and Central Office staff regarding general themes for the volunteer areas they supervise June 11-19: Conversations take place between board level supervisors and Volunteer Leaders (pre-schedule these meetings!) June 19-30: Conversations will take place between Volunteer Leaders and Volunteers (pre-schedule these meetings!)
While potentially time consuming, we know this is going to be an extraordinary process. The opportunity to have a 360-degree evaluation for all volunteers serving and leading our Association allows for personal and professional development of individual volunteers and a more effective volunteer driven Association.

Volunteer Position Description Review The first stages of the 2010 volunteer appointment process will involve all current volunteers reviewing and revising their current position descriptions. The volunteer position descriptions include a position impact statement and performance standards/indicators of success, providing critical guidance and direction to volunteers. This year, in an effort to increase consistency among position descriptions and ensure position description accuracy, the Volunteer Coordinator, Central Office Staff, and Executive Board have completed an in depth review of the position descriptions before they are sent to volunteer leaders. Volunteer leaders will receive detailed instructions the week of April 27th and are expected to involve committee members in this process. Revised position descriptions are due to the Volunteer Coordinator by Friday, May 29th.Your Role in the AFA Budgeting Process Budget requests for the 2009-2010 fiscal year are due May 1. To submit a request, please follow the instructions on the budget request form (Appendix B of the Standard Operating Procedures Manual). Any questions should be directed to Shelly Brown Dobek, Vice President for Administration and Finance, at shelly_dobek@ncsu.edu or 919/513-2910. Learn more about the Association's budgeting process.

Has Running for the AFA Executive Board Crossed Your Mind?So you have been volunteering for AFA this past year, or perhaps for several years, and maybe the thought of an Executive Board position has crossed your mind. Maybe you have even been approached or nominated before, but hesitated thinking this was too much of a time commitment; or maybe you just were not clear what exactly you would be doing if you were a Board member. The Association of Fraternity Advisors needs leaders who are committed to advancing the fraternal movement, but what does this mean? What does serving on the Board really entail? >>Read more about Nominations and Elections

March 2009 Executive Board Meeting Update As volunteers, your role is central to the success of the Association. The volunteers are central to every discussion that the Executive Board has during our in-person meetings and during our monthly conference calls.
At our most recent in person meeting in March, several items were on the agenda that have potential impact for our volunteer base. One of those items was the approval of a volunteer position description review process that is taking place this spring. >>Read the full update from President Carolyn E. Whittier, Ph.D.

Volunteers of the Month - Tyler Blair and Michelle Castro Tyler Blair, Graduate Assistant for the Student Involvement and Leadership Center at The University of Kansas, and Michelle Castro, Assistant Dean of Students at the University of Miami, serve the Association as members of the Virtual Seminar Series and have been selected as April Volunteers of the Month. Tyler and Michelle were the first Virtual Seminar Series coordinators for 2009, kicking off February with the VSS "Inclusive Fraternal Organizations: What advisors need to know about emerging fraternities and sororities?" Their nominator, M.L. Gough, states "Tyler coordinated the marketing, while Michelle worked with the presenters to coordinate the script and powerpoint. Together they were an ideal team to produce a great VSS." Thanks Tyler and Michelle!
Please contact the Central Office to recommend a Volunteer of the Month.
