Planning Effective Leadership Retreats
Tuesday, July 24, 2007

Description
This seminar is designed to educate campus professionals on the best practices in values based retreat planning. We will approach retreat planning based on the need and values of your community and provide examples of how to develop a curriculum that will move your community forward from year to year. This seminar will focus on planning leadership retreats using strategies that can be applied to any college student leadership development curriculum.

Topics covered will include:
Logistical Considerations
We will discuss the basic steps involved in planning a retreat by considering budget, selecting a location/venue, timeline, selecting facilitators, length, student involvement, and assessment.
Curriculum Development
  1. Officer Transition: Example of a successful retreat where topics include university and governing council policy, effective communication structure with campus, volunteer and headquarters staff, standards and expectations, and values-based decision making.
  2. Strategic Planning: How to design a retreat to help fraternity and sorority communities establish a plan for their future by identifying specific and measurable goals that result in actual change beyond just conversation over a campfire.
  3. Community/ Team Building: While relationship building is a natural outcome of a retreat, we will provide strategies for how to intentionally build community.  We will also provide information on a specific activity guaranteed to unify your participants and get them thinking about the values in their community.
Presenters
  • Shelly Brown Dobek, North Carolina State University
  • Ryan King, Beta Theta Pi
