Engaging Students Proactively through Social Media
October 28, 2009
Facebook and Twitter are not the enemy! Students don’t communicate the same way they always have and it is important for professionals to discover and understand the best ways to communicate with them. This seminar will incorporate web and telephone technology to educate participants on how interacting through social media can enhance the effectiveness of campus and organization staffs. Examples of fraternity and sorority communities and organizations that are using social media in innovative and effective ways to better serve their students will be reviewed. Associate members of the Association will also provide resources to help navigate social media more effectively. An excellent skill building opportunity, this seminar will aid those who advise at either the campus or organization staff level. Participants will be able to discuss questions, concerns, and successes they have in their experiences with using social media.
Learning outcomes for this Virtual Seminar Series will include, but are not limited to:
-
Participants will learn about different types of social media and how they are effectively being used with students on both the campus and organization level.
-
Participants will learn about resources that are available to aid in their efforts to communicate more effectively with their students through social media.
-
Participants will gain insight from other participants on their experience of social media and how it is impacting their advisory role.

Primary: Innovator |

A fraternity/sorority advisor implements new programs that benefit community members. An advisor promotes the practical application and effective use of technology to communicate with members, support their positive use of online communities, provide online educational opportunities, and promote the fraternity/sorority experience.
Secondary: Collaborator |

A fraternity/sorority advisor collaborates with and often serves as a liaison among potential members, chapter members, chapter officers, campus faculty, campus administrators, other offices on campus, alumni/alumnae, local volunteer advisors, local house corporation officers, inter/national headquarter staff members, and inter/national officers. The advisor works with these other constituencies on the common goal of positively impacting the reputation and success of the fraternity/sorority community by building partnerships to impact positive change, sharing information regularly, maximizing the reach of limited resources, and developing key partnerships. A fraternity/sorority advisor builds trusting relationships for the betterment of the councils, chapters, and chapter members.
